Adult Leaders
The Coronado Battalion & Training Ship Bora Bora are always in need of adult leaders interested in working with the cadets in the program. The NSCC officer corps is composed of dedicated men and women, civilian and military, who are interested in the education and training of American youth, and in furthering the goals and objectives of the NSCC/NLCC. All are volunteers, receiving no pay or allowances. While past military experience is helpful, it is by no means required. The most important quality is the ability to always follow the motto "It's for the cadets!"
Adult participation in the program ranges from individuals who work behind the scenes to handle administration, supply, finance, transport, or other support functions to those who work front and center providing leadership and mentoring to the cadets. While there is an NSCC adult rank structure for the purpose of an NSCC support and seniority system which parallels the Navy's officer rank structure (thru Lieutenant Commander, O-4), there is no correlation between rank in the military and rank in the NSCC. Initial appointment in the NSCC may not, therefore, be in the equivalent rank held in the military.
All new adult volunteers start as an Instructor (or Warrant Officer for qualifying former service members) for their first year. If they meet weight and physical standards similar to (but less stringent than) the Navy's, they can choose to be a uniformed instructor. Doing so entails additional commitment to maintain appropriate grooming standards to wear the uniform with pride and respect, with a goal of enhancing the cadets' experience in the program. If at the end of the first year the Instructor wishes to move on to Officer status (starting at Ensign), they must meet additional requirements such as completing the Officer/Midshipman Study Guide, Officer Professional Development courses, and performing escort duty at NSCC trainings. Additionally, while Instructors' attendance does not affect the unit's annual score, Officers' attendance does. In that light, a minimum 75% attendance record at drills must be maintained (90% preferred).
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify as an adult leader for the Coronado Battalion or TS Bora Bora of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets, you must be:
- recommended for appointment by the Commanding Officer;
- 21 years or older and not have reached age 75, but those 18 - 21 may qualify for Midshipman status in the NSCC, and those over 75 may qualify for an age waiver;
- a citizen of the United States;
- Adult applicants must be in good health commensurate with their age group and be free from any ailment or condition that would prevent them from satisfactorily performing their primary duty of supervising youth. NOTE: Adults not physically qualified to perform all duties may still participate with a waiver from NHQ considering the parameters of their expected contribution to the NSCC program;
- of good moral character and able to pass a background check.
